PSAMMOPORA PACE, A View in CoL NEW SYNONYM OF IOTARPHIA CAMERON ( COLEOPTERA : STAPHYLINIDAE : ALEOCHARINAE )

While working on Australian coastal Athetini ( Coleoptera : Staphylinidae : Aleocharinae ), we recognized that the genus Psammopora Pace, 2003 could not be separated from Iotarphia Cameron, 1943 . The description of Psammopora suggests many characters shared with Iotarphia . This led us to study the systematic status of Psammopora delittlei Pace , the sole member of the monotypic genus.

Examination of the holotype of P. delittlei deposited in the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG), Launceston, Tasmania, Australia revealed that the specimen represents a species of Iotarphia by the following characters: labrum broad and emarginate in anterior margin; ligula divided into two broad lobes; mentum emarginate in anterior margin; infraorbital carina absent; mesoventral process blunt at apex, reaching to half of mesocoxa; metaventral process narrow and pointed at apex, contiguous with mesoventral process; tarsal formula 4-5-5; metatarsi long.

Moreover, we noticed that P. delittlei is similar to Iotarphia australis Cameron, 1943 based on the shape of the antennomeres, elytral color pattern, abdominal microsculpture, shape of the female tergite and sternite VIII, and shape of the spermatheca. The diagnostic characteristics were not sufficient to maintain the separation of P. delittlei from I. australis . Therefore, after studying four syntypes of I. australis ( Fig. 1 View Fig ) and the holotype of P. delittlei ( Fig. 2 View Fig ), the following synonymy is proposed.
