Ectopioglossa luzonica Selis , sp. nov.
( Figs. 10–13 View FIGURES 10–13 )
Diagnosis. This species comes close to Ectopioglossa keiseri van der Vecht, 1963 , and Ectopioglossa henseni Gusenleitner, 1990 , due to the presence of an apical raised lamella on T3, which is absent in the other species of the genus. It can be recognized by [characteristics of the other two species in brackets]: punctures on pronotum indistinct and clearly smaller than those on mesoscutum [similar to those on mesoscutum in E. henseni and larger in E. keiseri ], lateral face of propodeum densely and finely striate and without punctures ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 10–13 ) [strongly striate in E. henseni and with punctures in E. keiseri ], T1–T2 almost entirely impunctate [with distinct punctures in E. henseni and E. keiseri ], hairs on T3–T5 longer than height of apical lamella of T3 ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 10–13 ) [shorter in E. henseni ], legs black with yellow markings [ferrugineous in E. keiseri ], wings with yellow tinge [strongly fuscous with purple reflections in E. keiseri ].
Material examined. HOLOTYPE, ♀, pinned, “Atimonan PI / 21-VII-1928 / A.P. Varona ” [handwritten on brownish label], “MCZ” [printed on orange label] ( MSNVE).
Description. Female. Body length 12 mm; fore wing length 9 mm.
Head as long as wide in frontal view. Clypeus almost entirely flattened in lateral view, very weakly convex basally, apical margin circularly emarginated, apical teeth pointed and curved out, clypeus 1.1× as long as wide ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 10–13 ). Distance from posterior ocellus to inner eye margin 0.55× as the distance from posterior ocellus to occipital margin; ocelli disposed as a obtuse triangle, distance between posterior ocelli 4× as long as distance between anterior ocellus and posterior ocellus; posterior margin of vertex elongated medially. Temples as wide as eye at bottom of ocular sinus; occipital carina indistinct medially, thickened ventrally and angled in ventral half. Scape 3.4× as long as apically wide; F1 1.5× as long as apically wide; F2–F9 progressively shorter; F10 bullet shaped. Foveae small and close to each other, located in a semicircular depression, each bearing a tuft of short hairs. Mesosoma in dorsal view elongate, 1.6× as long as wide, depressed dorso-ventrally in lateral view. Pronotal carina short but distinct for entire length, rounded on humeri. Mesoscutum as long as wide between tegulae, flattened in lateral view. Scutellum in lateral view flattened. Metanotum weakly oblique in lateral view. Tegulae narrow, posterior lobe short and equaling parategula. Parategulae long and straight. Mesepisternum convex, epicnemial carina narrow but distinct for entire length, posterior margin depressed. Propodeum strongly oblique in lateral view; posterior face with a median longitudinal depression not distinctly marked laterally, medially with a basal fovea and then a longitudinal carina; lateral face weakly convex; submarginal carina forming a dentiform projection laterally to valvula. T1 2.5× as long as apically wide in dorsal view, basally with a transverse lamellar carina. T2 convex basally, then flattened. Apical margin of T2 and T3 with a vertical translucent lamella, not reaching lateral margin of tergum. T1 reduced to a triangular apical portion. S2 almost flat from base to apex ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 10–13 ).
Whole body covered by erected golden bristles, except for propodeum and T1 where the bristles are silvery. Bristles longer on propodeum, basal half of T1, T3–T6 and S2–S6.
Almost entirely smooth and shiny. Clypeus with shallow and moderately dense punctures. Lateral face of propodeum finely and regularly striate ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 10–13 ). Median depression of propodeum with horizontal carinae lateral to median longitudinal carina. Some fine and indistinct punctures present on frons, mesoscutum and lateral margin of T1.
Color. Black; underside of flagellum and tarsi ferrugineous; following parts yellow: clypeus except apical margin and central black spot, ventral side of scape, vertical line running on frons from clypeus to anterior ocellus, ocular sinus, spots between eye and posterior ocelli, line behind dorsal half of eye, laterally enlarged band on anterior margin of pronotum, anterior and posterior spots on tegulae, parategulae, lateral spots on scutellum, apically enlarged markings along margins of median depression of propodeum, large circular spot on dorsal half of mesepisternum, laterally enlarged apical band on T1, regular apical band on T2, bisinuate apical band on T3–T4, outer face of fore legs and mid tibiae, apical spot on mid and hind femora, line on outer face of hind tibiae. Wings with a weak yellowish tinge.
Male. Unknown.
Distribution. Philippine Islands: Luzon.
Etymology. The specific name is in reference to the provenance of this species, the island of Luzon.
