Empoascanara (Empoascanara) kotoshonis (Matsumura, 1940) View in CoL new record

( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 7 )

Zygina kotoshonis Matsumura, 1940 , Ins. Mats., 15: 45 [Kotosho].

Empoascanara kotoshonis: Dworakowska 1980 , Reichenbachia, 18: 195.

Body length (mean): ♂, 2.4–2.8 mm (2.6 mm); ♀, 2.5–2.8 mm (2.7 mm).

Distribution. Japan * (Ryukyus: Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabujima, Okinawa, Kumejima, Aguni, Miyako, Ishigaki, Kohama, Iriomote, Hateruma, Yonaguni); Taiwan.

Remarks. This species is newly recorded and more than 500 specimens were collected from throughout the Ryukyus, Japan. This leafhopper, belonging to the E. sonani species-group, is very similar to E. (E.) sonani (Matsumura, 1931) in the shape of male genitalia, but easily distinguished by having black basal triangles on the mesonotum. Moreover it is differentiated by the large traverse patch on the head. This marking originates from two lateral patches, and these are fused to each other. But the degree of this fusion is different individually.

Bionomics. This species is mostly found on grasses which grow in open habitats.
