Distribution. The reference to the Cape of Good Hope as a site of origin for the species is in error as the species has been recorded from much of the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America. The species has been reported from Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, Suriname, Trinidad, and Venezuela ( Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2011 a, 2013, 2014, 2020d, e; Nunes et al. 2023).
