Fidicinoides determinata ( Walker, 1850) View in CoL new record

Fidicina determinata Walker 1858b: 14 View in CoL ( Venezuela).

Remarks. Distant (1881a) synonymized Fidicina determinata with Fidicina picea and Fidicina perinax Stål, 1864 and provided the first record from Guyana. Both Distant (1881a) and Uhler (1892) list Demerara as a source of specimens of Fidicinoides picea while considering Fidicinoides determinata a junior synonym.

Fidicinoides determinata was removed from its junior synonym status by Boulard & Martinelli (1996) illustrating the different genitalia of the taxa. All records for Fidicinoides picea are from mountainous regions of Central and South America ( Metcalf 1963a; Sanborn 2013, 2018b, 2020c). There is no specific locality in Venezuela given for the holotype in Walker (1858b). The similarity in the habitat of most of Venezuela and Guyana and the difference in the mountainous habitats and Guyana ( Morrone et al. 2022) suggest that the species referenced by Distant (1881a) and Uhler (1892) were Fidicinoides determinata and not Fidicinoides picea . Therefore, the records of Fidicinoides picea from Guyana are considered to be Fidicinoides determinata and the species is added to the Guyana cicada fauna while Fidicinoides picea is removed from the Guyana cicada fauna.

Distribution. The species has been reported previously from Argentina, Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela ( Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2013, 2020a; Sanborn & Heath 2014). The disjunct distribution records are most likely the result of incomplete sampling since specimens from Mexico and Argentina are morphologically the same.
