Diagnosis. A rather small species, abdomen short and rounded; vertex in male very narrow; frons almost reduced to a line; inner vertical seta very weak, only slightly longer than upper postocular setae; fine and crossed apical scutellar setae; thorax with very dense and long hairs on anterolateral portion of postpronotal lobe and posterior portion of anepisternum; 2 presutural acrostichal setae; 4 postsutural dorsocentral setae.

Redescription. Body length. 8.6–9.9 mm.

Male. Head with silvery grayish-white pruinosity on fronto-orbital plate and parafacial, more whitish on face and grayish on occiput and gena; frons strongly narrowed above, at narrowest point 0.06–0.07 of head width; frontal vitta narrowed above, at most as wide as fronto-orbital plate in front of ocellar triangle; parafacial rather wide, weakly narrowed below, slightly wider than postpedicel at mid height in horizontal position (subequal in width in profile); face convex, lower margin well produced forward; gena 0.42–0.45 of eye height in horizontal position (0.30–0.33 in profile); inner vertical setae fine, hair-like, curved anteriorly on apical portion and crossed apically, slightly longer than upper postocular setae and ocellar setae; 14–18 frontal setae, lowest seta slightly below level of middle of pedicel, an additional outside row of setae present on apical portion; vibrissa inserted above lower margin of face; upper occiput with a row of black hairs. Antenna falling short of lower margin of face by about length of pedicel; postpedicel about 1.5 times as long as pedicel, rounded apically; arista thickened on basal 2/5, 2nd aristomere at most as long as wide. Proboscis short; prementum at most 3 times as long as wide; palpus black, 4/5 as long as pedicel and postpedicel combined.

Thorax black, apical 1/3–2/3 of scutellum reddish yellow; thin grayish-brown pruinosity on dorsum, sometimes denser and more grayish on postpronotal lobe, median portion of presutural scutum, proepisternum, posterior portion of proepimeron and katepisternum; 4 rather broad longitudinal vittae visible on scutum when seen from behind. Hairs dense, fine and long, especially denser and longer on anterolateral portion of postpronotal lobe and posterior portion of anepisternum; 2 posthumeral setae; 2 presutural and 2 postsutural acrostichal setae; 3 presutural and 4 postsutural dorsocentral setae; 0 presutural and 3 postsutural intra-alar setae; 4 supra-alar setae; 3 katepisternal setae; anatergite with several fine, short hairs; 2 rather fine and long suberect discal scutellar setae; basal, lateral and subapical scutellar setae strong; apical scutellar setae rather fine, as long as scutellum; distance between bases of subapical scutellar setae subequal to that between basal and subapical setae of corresponding side, or slightly longer. Wing hyaline, at most slightly tinged with pale brown along veins, no distinct brownish tinge along r-m crossvein; calypter pale brownish, especially along margin; relative lengths of 2nd, 3rd and 4th costal sectors approximately as 3:5:2.5; vein M bent at a right angle, sometimes with a short appendage at bend, at most 1/2 as long as r-m crossvein; length of vein M from dm-cu crossvein to bend about two times distance between bend and wing margin. Legs black, pulvilli pale brown, claws brown, darkened apically; fore tibia with 1 posterodorsal and 2 posterior setae; mid tibia with 4–5 anterodorsal setae, middle 3 setae strong, 2 posterodorsal and 1 ventral setae; hind tibia with a row of anterodorsal setae of irregular lengths, 2–3 posterodorsal and 1 ventral setae; claws and pulvilli long, fore claws and pulvilli slightly longer than 5th tarsomere.

Abdomen black, sides of 3rd and 4th tergites narrowly reddish brown; 3rd to 5th tergites with grayish white pruinosity with tessellate appearance, pruinosity becoming thinner on posterior portion of each tergite. Hairs dense, fine, rather long and erect to suberect; syntergite 1+2 without median marginal setae and with 1 lateral marginal seta; 3rd tergite with 2 pairs of median discal, 1 pair of median marginal and 1 lateral marginal setae; 4th tergite with 1–2 pairs of median discal and a row of marginal setae; 5th tergite with 2–3 pairs or a complete row of median discal and a row of marginal setae; 5th sternite with small triangular tubercle on basal portion of median cleft.

Terminalia: 6th tergite rather short, with thin grayish white pruinosity, bearing a row of 4–6 rather strong marginal setae and 1–2 rows of fine short hairs, fused with syntergosternite 7+8 mid-dorsally; syntergosternite 7+8 and epandrium shining black; cerci in dorsal view wide at base and narrowed to basal 1/3, then parallel-sided to apical 1/3 and narrowed to apex, basal widest portion about 2/3 as wide as length of cerci; surstylus nearly straight, very weakly narrowed to apex, apex with 3 short spines.

Female. Differs from male as follows: frons wide, vertex 0.31–0.33 of head width; frontal vitta slightly widened anteriorly, only slightly narrower than fronto-orbital plate at middle; inner vertical setae strong, converging apically, about 6/7 of eye height; outer vertical seta about 2/3 as long as inner vertical seta; ocellar setae about as long as outer vertical seta; 1 fine outwardly directed prevertical seta, about 2/3 as long as ocellar setae; 2 subequally long proclinate orbital setae, subequal in length to ocellar setae; 8–10 frontal setae; parafacial 1.3–1.4 times as wide as postpedicel at mid height; gena 0.58–0.61 of eye height in horizontal position (0.47–0.51 in profile); thorax with slightly shorter and sparser hairs than in male, lateral portion of postpronotal lobe and posterior portion of anepisternum with dense hairs; claws and pulvilli short, fore claws and pulvilli about 1/2 as long as 5th tarsomere. Abdomen with shorter and more depressed hairs than in male; 5th tergite with marginal setae short and situated anteriorly. Terminalia: 6th tergite narrowly separated into hemitergites mid-dorsally, short, broadened below, with many long setae posteriorly; 6th abdominal spiracle on membrane of anteroventral portion to 6th tergite; 7th spiracle on ventral portion of 6th tergite; 6th sternite long, rather broadly excavated on anteroventral margin; 7th tergite broadly separated into nearly quadrate hemitergites, with a row of rather long setae on posterior margin; 7th sternite in ventral view rather broadly excavated on anteromedian and posteromedian margins, with a row of rather long setae marginally; 8th tergite absent; 8th sternite short and rather wide, about 4 times as wide as long, with several fine setae on posterior margin; epiproct absent, replaced by a pair of setae.

Type material examined. Holotype male: [ Japan] Obihiro / S. Takano // 14.v.1950 / Kawanishi [in Japanese ] ( CNC).

Additional material examined (all in KUM). Japan, Honshu: 3 males, Tokyo, Mt. Kumotori , 24.iv.1971, S. Shinonaga ; 2 males, 2 females, Nagano Pref., Shimashima , 23.v.1975, Malaise trap, A. Nakanishi & J. Emoto ; 1 male, Nagano Pref., Shigakogen, Kawaragoya , 31.v.1975, Malaise trap, A. Nakanishi & J. Emoto .

Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu), Mongolia.

Remarks. Mesnil (1972a) treated Platychira tuberculata Zimin, 1957 as a junior synonym of this species and Herting (1984) followed him. I think P. tuberculata is a distinct species differing from P. emdeni as redescribed below.
