Diagnosis. Face finely punctate, rugose or rugose-punctate; frons usually with a median carina and sides somewhat elevated; apex of upper tooth of mandible a little narrower than apex of lower one; mesoscutum mostly covered with transverse rugae; clypeus small and rectangular, truncate or concave ventrally; mesopleuron punctate, sometimes with transverse wrinkles; fore wing without areolet; hind wing with a basal group of usually three hamuli, followed distally by single widely spaced hamuli; first tergite 0.8–1.3 times as long as its apical width, with weak basal dorso-lateral carina; first sternite of female with a pair of large flat tubercles; female 8th metasomal tergite with truncate median projection; ovipositor moderately long to very long, compressed. Keys to genera of Rhyssinae can be found in Townes (1969) and Kamath & Gupta (1972).

Triancyra species are easily confused with Epirhyssa and the definition of the latter genus is rather vague. The upper mandibular tooth is wider and slightly longer than the lower tooth in Epirhyssa , while in Triancyra the lower tooth is slightly wider and longer.
