Stethantyx Townes, 1971 View in CoL View at ENA
Type species: Stethantyx nearctica Townes, 1971 .
Diagnosis. Medium sized to moderately large species with body length usually 4.0 to 9.0 mm and fore wing length 3.0 to 6.0 mm.
Head very broad, roundly narrowed behind eyes in dorsal view; temple 0.33–0.5× as long as eye width. Mandible with upper tooth usually much longer than lower tooth, or rarely teeth are subequal by length. Clypeus broad, lenticular, flat to weakly convex in lateral view. Malar space 0.1–0.8× as long as basal width of mandible (usually 0.4–0.6×). Flagellum of antenna with 22–44 flagellomeres, rather strongly tapered towards apex to more or less filiform, sometimes slightly clavate. Face with weak to rather strong elongate prominence centrally. Occipital carina complete. Hypostomal carina absent.
Notaulus absent or represented by tubercle distant from anterolateral margin of mesoscutum ( Figs 34, 35 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ), or weak to strong wrinkle ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 36 – 39 ). Scutellum with lateral longitudinal carinae usually long, sometimes extending from its base to posterior end and joining posteriorly ( Figs 25 View FIGURES 24 – 29 , 39 View FIGURES 36 – 39 ). Prepectal carina not joining anterior margin of mesopleuron, continuing above and reaching subtegular ridge ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 24 – 29 ), or vanishing dorsally. Foveate groove of mesopleuron well developed, narrow and sharp to very broad, weakly to strongly oblique, crenulate, situated in anterior 0.5–0.7 of mesopleuron ( Figs 24, 29 View FIGURES 24 – 29 , 43 View FIGURES 40 – 46 ). Propodeum with strong carinae, sometimes with lateral longitudinal carina partly developed in front of transverse carina ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 24 – 29 ), usually with basal area which is 0.3– 0.7× as long as apical area, or rarely with basal keel. Propodeal spiracle round, adjacent to pleural carina or separated from it by distance up to 2.5× diameter of spiracle. Apical area flat, anteriorly rounded, pointed or truncate; apical longitudinal carinae well developed.
Fore wing ( Figs 1–10 View FIGURES 1 – 6 View FIGURES 7 – 10 ) with vein 2 m-cu postfurcal. Veins Rs +2 r and Rs usually angled 100–135°, or occasionally almost 90°. Vein 2 rs-m and abscissa of M between 2 rs-m and 2 m-cu long and not thickened. First abscissa of radius straight, longer than width of pterostigma. R 1 (metacarp) long, more or less reaching apex of fore wing. Hind wing with cu 1& cu-a inclivous to weakly reclivous. Hind tibial spurs weakly curved at apex. Tarsal claws moderately large, simple.
First tergite 3.5–5.0× as long as posteriorly broad, with spiracle situated distinctly behind its centre. Glymma present, small and shallow to large and deep, situated near or somewhat behind middle of tergite, always joining by furrow to ventral part of postpetiole (sometimes furrow weak and very shallow). Second tergite long, at least 1.4× as long as anteriorly broad, usually 1.8–3.0× as long as broad. Thyridial depression long. Ovipositor slender, short to very long (longer than body), upcurved, rarely weakly sinuate at apex ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 30 – 35 ), with shallow dorsal subapical depression and sometimes with weak teeth dorsally and very fine teeth ventrally ( Fig. 40 View FIGURES 40 – 46 ).
Body with various amount of yellow, orange and black. Flagellum black or brown, usually paler basally, sometimes with conspicuous pale band ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 11 – 15 ). Wings sometimes weakly infumate.
