Grotiusomyia nigricans (Howard) View in CoL

Figs 2, 19, 20, 47, 48, 77, 94

Miotropis nigricans Howard, 1894:95 View in CoL . Lectotype female in NHMUK, designated by Bouček (1977:13), examined.

Derostenus violaceus Howard, 1897:166–167 View in CoL . Holotype male in NHMUK, examined. Synonymized by Bouček (1977:13). Grotiusomyia nigricans (Howard) , Girault (1918:126).

Diagnosis. Mandibles yellowish-brown with a row of small teeth at apex; flagellum pale brown, 0.6× as long as width of mesoscutum, F4 0.6× as long as wide, apex of clava blunt ( Fig. 47); frons between scrobes and eyes and vertex with strong reticulation ( Figs 77, 94); occipital margin with an edge behind ocellar triangle ( Fig. 77); mesoscutum and mesoscutellum with same colour and reticulation ( Fig. 19); mesoscutellum convex; dorsellum flat, smooth and shiny, posterior margin ±evenly rounded with several sharp dents; fore wing with 3–5 setae in apico-dorsal part of costal cell, completely hyaline ( Fig. 2); fore and mid coxae black with metallic tinges ( Fig. 2); gaster ( Fig. 19) 1.8× as long as wide; Gt 1 0.3× as long as length of gaster, dorsal surface smooth, posterior margin curved slightly forwards; Gt 6 0.2× as long as length of gaster with anterior part 2.7× as wide as width of posterior part, posterior margin straight with sharp edge.

Variation. Length 1.3–2.0 mm. Costal cell with 3–5 setae in apico-dorsal part. Propodeal callus with 10–13 setae. The specimens from Costa Rica have antennal flagellum darker (dark yellowish-brown to pale brown) than specimens from the West Indies (yellowish-brown).

Distribution. Bahamas ( Bouček 1977), Costa Rica (new record), Cuba ( Thompson 1955), Dominican Republic ( De Santis 1989), Grenada ( Howard 1897), Puerto Rico ( Thompson 1955), St. Vincent & Grenadines ( Howard 1894).

Hosts. Hedylepta indicata (Fabricius) ( Pyralidae ) and Urbanus proteus (L.) ( Thompson, 1955).
