Biennial; base of stem covered with brown remains of the previous year’s leaves; basal leaves spathulate; corolla-tube up to twice as long as calyx. 2n = 36. Throughout most o f the range o f the species.

Ecotypic variants:

Autumnal: Type of the species.

Aestival: Gentiana campestris var. suecica Froelich , Gent. Diss. 92 (1796).

Montane: Gentiana islandica (Murb.) Dörfler , Herb. Norm. 38: 269 (1898) ( G. campestris subsp. islandica (Murb.) Vollmann ).
