Fleshy herb. Stems 5-30 cm, erect or procumbent, rooting at nodes. Leaves on rhizomes broadly triangular, more or less membranous; leaves on erect shoots 4-15 x 1-5-6 mm, decussate, sessile, entire, elliptic-oblong to obovate, obtuse or acute. Flowers 3-6 mm in diameter. Calyx white to purple or pink; lobes obtuse, broadly hyaline. Style 2-5 mm, persistent. Capsule 2-5 mm. Seeds 3-11, trigonous, minutely reticulate. 2« = 30. Maritime habitats and on saline soils inland. Atlantic, Baltic and Arctic coasts o f Europe, and very locally in the W. Mediterranean region; inland in C. & E. Europe and Spain.
