Shrub up to 100(-200) cm, tomentose. Leaves 20-40(-50) mm, lanceolate, oblong or linear, entire, white-tomentose when young, becoming green. Spike 2-8 cm; bracts (1—)3—8 mm, usually broadly rhombic-obovate, acuminate; bracteoles absent or minute; verticillasters 6- to 10- flowered. Calyx 4-5-7 mm, 13-veined, the upper tooth with an obcordate appendage at the apex. Corolla 10-12 mm, purple. Mediterranean region; widely cultivated fo r ornament and fo r perfume.
