Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, opposite or in whorls of 3, simple. Flowers solitary, axillary. Calyx campanulate, 5- dentate, accrescent. Corolla 5-lobed, rotate or broadly campanulate. Stamens 5, exserted, inserted near top of the short corolla-tube. Stigma capitate. Fruit a globose berry, surrounded and usually much exceeded by the inflated calyx; seeds suborbicular to reniform.
