(a) Subsp. officinalis :

Lemon-scented, up to 90 cm. Leaves glabrescent, or sparsely hairy above, glandular-puberulent and more or less sparsely hairy beneath; at least the upper cauline and floral leaves more or less cuneate at the base. Middle tooth of the upper lip of fruiting calyx conspicuous, broadly triangular. Widely cultivated, and naturalized throughout Europe except parts o f the north.

Cultivated specimens have 2«=32. The limits of the native range of this subspecies are uncertain, as the plants have been widely introduced.
