Ascending. Pedicels in lower part of inflorescence up to 2-5 cm. Calyx up to 8 mm. Nutlets up to 2x1-4 mm. 2/2=784, 88. • Fennoscandia, Estonia, Latvia.

Subsp. laxa occurs in N orth America and may possibly occur in Europe; further investigation is needed. (36-39). M. scorpioides group. Biennial or perennial, often with rhizome and stolons. Stems often with decurrent leafbases and angled; indumentum in lower part of stem variable, inflorescence-axis with upwardly-pointing appressed hairs. Calyx with short, straight, appressed bristles, divided to J or less, open in fruit, not deciduous; teeth broadly triangular. Limb of corolla flat; tube usually as long as the calyx. Nutlets ovoidellipsoid; rim absent or indistinct; attachment-area roundish with a spongy appendage. Very variable, especially in C. Europe.
