(a) Subsp. angustifolius ( R. montanus Sauter , Alectorolophus major subsp. montanus (Sauter) Wettst. ): Leaves 2-5(-8) mm wide, linear-lanceolate. Internodes and branches numerous. Bracts narrowly triangular. Capsule 6-7 mm. Seeds c. 4 mm. Throughout much o f the range o f the species, but absent from parts o f the north and the south-east.

Ecotypic variants:

Autumnal: type of the subspecies.

Montane: R. major subsp. lykae Soó , Feddes Repert. 26: 201 (1929).
