Remarks. Valid taxon described from Australia ( Sars 1885). Very common species in India (Michael & Sharma B.K. 1988; Korovchinsky 2004). This freshwater cladoceran is also reported from an intertidal sandy beach, Balaramguri, Orissa coast, Bay of Bengal by Chatterji et al. (1995). Study on the life history of this species grown in different culturing media was done by Jana & Pal (1984).

Distribution. Tropics and subtropics of eastern hemisphere ( Korovchinsky 2004).

Diaphanosoma excisum var. longiremis Ekman, 1904

Indian records. Bihar — Nayar (1977); Maharashtra — Rane (2006); Rajasthan — Biswas (1971); West Bengal — Sewell (1935).

Remarks. Doubtful taxon. It was described from Sudan ( Ekman 1904). Michael & Sharma B.K. (1988) kept these records under Diaphanosoma excisum . Korovchinsky (2004) did not regard this taxon as valid. Probably this is a junior synonym of D. excisum .

Diaphanosoma excisum var. stingelini Jenkin, 1934

Indian records. Rajasthan — Biswas (1971).

Remarks. Doubtful taxon. It was described from Kenya ( Jenkin 1934). Michael & Sharma B.K. (1988) synonymised it with Diaphanosoma excisum Sars.

Diaphanosoma hydrocephalus Brehm, 1952 Type locality. " Probe 907 von bassein bei Bombay ", Maharashtra ( Brehm 1952a).

Indian records. Maharashtra — Brehm (1952a).

Remarks. This species is a junior synonym of Diaphanosoma senegal Gauthier (see Brehm 1953; Korovchinsky 2004).

Diaphanosoma leuctenbergianum Fischer, 1850

Indian records. Rajasthan —Sharma V. et al. (2008), Sharma R. et al. (2011); West Bengal — Venkataraman & Das (2001); General record— Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).

Remarks. Doubtful Indian record. It was described from European Russia ( Fischer 1850). D. leuctenbergianum is not regarded as a valid taxon ( Korovchinsky 1992, 2004). It is impossible to associate the record of Venkataraman & Das (2001) with any existing species.

Diaphanosoma modigliani Richard, 1894

Indian records. West Bengal — Sewell (1935); General record— Fernando & Kanduru (1984); Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).

Remarks. D. modigliani is a valid species ( Korovchinsky 2004; Kotov & Ferrari 2010) described from Indonesia ( Richard 1894b). But its Indian record is doubtful. Korovchinsky (1992) remarked: “Sewell (1934) mentioned D. modiglianii from a salt lake in the Calcutta region, but his description is very brief, contains no drawings and it is impossible to judge, even approximately, to what species his Diaphanosoma really belongs.” To date, D. modigliani s. str. is known only in Sumatra and Sulawesi ( Indonesia).

Diaphanosoma paucispinosum Brehm, 1933

Indian records. General record— Fernando & Kanduru (1984).

Remarks. Described from Indonesia ( Brehm 1933a). This is a junior synonym of D. excisum Sars ( Korovchinsky 1992, 2004)
