(76) Alona intermedia Sars, 1862 View in CoL s.lat.

Indian records. Assam — Sharma B.K. & Sharma S. (2008a) ; Bihar — Kumar et al. (2011), Jammu &

Kashmir— Akthar (1972), Balkhi (1987), Akhtar et al. (2007); Kerala — Subhash Babu & Nayar (2004); Maharashtra — Rane (2005b), Patil G.P. et al. (2008), Jayabhaye (2010),; Madhya Pradesh — Mishra (2005); Manipur —Sharma B.K. & Sharma S. (2009a); Rajasthan —Sharma V. et al. (2012); Tripura —Venkataraman (1995b), Venkataraman & Das (2000); Uttarakhand —Kumar et al. (2012; as “ A. intermediate ”); West Bengal — Venkataraman & Das (1983), Venkataraman (1998c); General record— Fernando & Kanduru (1984); Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).

Remarks. Valid species described from Norway ( Sars 1862b). Oriental populations ( Idris 1983; Tanaka & Ohtaka 2010) and other tropical records need to be revised (Van Damme et al. 2010).

Biapertura intermedia Sars was reported from Kerala and claimed that as first record from India by Subhasbabu & Nayar (2004), while this species was already reported by several authors earlier as ‘ Alona intermedia ’. Reported from Uttarakhand as “ Alona intermediate ” by Kumar et al. (2012), but this is a clear misspelling.

Distribution. Cosmopolitan ( Smirnov 1971), but actually a species group (KVD, unpublished).

Alona intermedia minor Stingelin, 1905

Indian records. Rajasthan — Biswas, 1971.

Remarks. Described from Vietnam ( Stingelin 1905). No types in the collection of T. Stingelin, his description does not allow a decision on status and it is likely not even related to A. intermedia (Van Damme et al. 2010) . Therefore, no any evidence for its finding in India could be suggested.

Alona intermediate , misspelling—see Alona intermedia

Alona jabalpurensis (Rane, 1983) , see Celsinotum macronyx .

Alona karelica Stenroos, 1897

Indian records. Tamil Nadu — Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2002, 2009); General record— Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).

Remarks. A. karelica is a valid species described from Finland ( Stenroos 1897) and distributed only in Palaearctic ( Van Damme et al. 2011a). Most probably, the Indian authors meant another member of the pulchella - group. “Records from South-East Asia listed as A. cf. karelica (in Idris & Fernando 1981; Maiphae et al. 2005) are rejected, as the basal spine of the postabdomen is too long for this species; these records most likely correspond to A. archeri Sars, 1888 ” ( Van Damme et al. 2011a). The latter species, A. archeri , originally described from Australia, is likely present in India, and it is also known from neighbouring countries in the Oriental region (e.g., Maiphae et al. 2008).

Alona karua , see Karualona karua

Alona kwangsiensis , see Karualona kwangsiensis

Alona ladacensis Brehm, 1936

Type locality. “Estuary, Tso Moriri” in “Indian Tibet (Ladak and Rupshu)”, Jammu & Kashmir, India ( Brehm 1936) .

Indian records. Jammu & Kashmir— Brehm (1936); Fernando & Kanduru (1984), Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003)

Remarks. Species inquirenda (Van Damme et al. 2010).

Alona macronyx see Celsinotum macronyx

Alona monacantha , see Coronatella monacantha

Alona monocantha —misspelling, see Alona monacantha Alona monacantha tridentata , see Coronatella monacantha tridentata

Alona protzi Hartwig, 1900

Indian records. West Bengal — Sewell (1935); General record— Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).

Remarks. Valid species, described from Germany ( Hartwig 1900) with peculiar ecology, redescribed by Van Damme et al. (2009) and placed in a special genus Phreatalona Van Damme, Brancelj & Dumont, 2009 . Its presence in India seems to be extremely dubious. As real Phreatalona protzi is easily recognized by denticles in the posteroventral corner of the valves, it is likely that the Indian record may belong to a member of the C. monacantha- complex, which is not closely related (morphologically) to Phreatalona .

Alona pseudoanodonta anodonta , see Alona pseudoanodonta

Alona pseudoanodonta Brehm, 1933

Indian records. Maharashtra — Rane (2006); Tamil Nadu — Venkataraman (1998b); Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2002, 2009).

Remarks. A. pseudoanodonta was described from the Philippines ( Brehm 1933b). The level of description is not sufficient to recognize this species (Van Damme et al. 2010). The combination A. pseudoanodonta anodonta is wrong, because A. anodonta Daday, 1905 has priority and could be used as a name of subspecies for A. pseudoanodonta Brehm, 1933 (Van Damme et al. 2010).

Alona pseudoverrucosa ( Smirnov, 1971)

Indian records. Bihar — Sharma B.K. & Sharma S. (2001) (as Biapertura verrucosa pseudoverrucosa ); General record— Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003) .

Remarks. It was described from Paraguay ( Smirnov 1971). Junior synonym of A. verrucosa Sars, 1901 (Van Damme et al. 2010), now Anthalona (see Van Damme et al. 2011b).
