Remarks. In contrast to Frey (1982b) who, based on the absence of types (also confirmed by Kotov & Ferrari 2010) and the loss of the type locality in Syria ( Richard 1894a) due to drying, concluded that E. barroisi is a nomen dubium , we think that the latter is a valid taxon, as proposed by Frey’s successors ( Smirnov 1996; Kotov et al. 2011). But this taxon is, most probably, a group of cryptic species, and populations from different continents need to be revised. Recent attampt of redescription of E. barroisi s.str. ( Yalim & Ciplak 2010) was unsuccessful due to unsufficient quality of descriptions and llustrations.
Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003) represented both Ephemeroporus barroisi (Richard) and Chydorus barroisi Richard as two independent taxa in the same list, but they just indicate the same.
Distribution. “Similar specimens are reported from Syria, Iran, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Nicaragua, Africa, North America” ( Smirnov 1996), to North up to north affluents of the Amur River in Russia (Kotov et al. 2011). E. barroisi is common in the Oriental zone ( Maiphae et al. 2005; Tanaka & Ohtaka 2010) and more species of Ephemeroporus are present in the region.
