Niphetogryllacris Karny, 1937

Comments: This is yet another genus that is direly in need of revision, as it includes species from Asia and Oceania (and three species from some Pacific Islands), Nipetogryllacris niveifrons Karny, 1937 is the type species of the genus, and its holotype is a female from Sri Lanka, which makes validating the genus even more difficult, as if the males were available a better placement could be arranged confirming the status or the taxon or clarifying it as a synonym of other genera of the region.

In a first approach, it became evident that this genus is polyphyletic and that it contains species that should be placed in other genera of Hyperbaeninae or Gryllacridinae n. sensu. . With available information, the following changes are possible: four species are transferred to Claudiagryllacris n. gen. and five to Diaphanogryllacris (Hyperbaeninae: Capnogryllacridini), three to Griffinigryllacris n. gen., 15 to Stictogryllacris and one to Barombogryllacris ( Gryllacridinae : Gryllacridini), seven especies to Karnygryllacris n. gen. and two especies to Brunnergryllacris n. gen. ( Gryllacridinae : Progryllacridini). These changes are specified in each of the aforementioned genera.

All African species grouped in Niphetogryllacris have been placed in new genera of transferred to previous known ones, as mentioned. But even then most of the Asian and Pacific Island species are in an uncertain status, which means this genus has to be thoroughly revised to better place the remaining species in genera more suited to their morphological characters. If this genus remains valid, it might include only the species from Sri Lanka ( N. niveiformis , N, maculigeminata and N. roseivertex ) and possibly N. succinea (Bolivar, 1900) from India. This contribution places 36 out of 43 species, but seven species remain unplaced.
