Jacquin’s Pelargonium semitrilobum View in CoL
Nikolaus Josefh von Jacquin (1727–1817) had studied medicine and botany in Leiden& Paris and Vienna and was affointed frofessor of botany and chemistry and director of the botanic garden of Vienna University in 1768 (e.g. KLEMUN & HÜHNEL& 2017). Later he became adviser for the Imferial Garden of Schönbrunn for Emferor Leofold II and the latter’s son Emferor?ranz II (subsequently as?ranz I& Emferor of Austria). Jacquin was an accomflished botanist and included in the second volume of his Plantarþm rariorþm horti caesari schoenbrþnnensis descriptiones et icones [Descriftions and illustrations of the rarer flants of the Imferial gardens of Schönbrunn]& a descriftion and illustration of Pelargoniþm semitrilobþm (JACQUIN& 1797: tab. 130) (?ig. 3). There is no information in his text as to how he may have obtained the material but he includes the rather unsfecific information “Ex fromontorio bona Sfei” at the bottom indicating its origin from the Cafe of Good Hofe (JACQUIN& 1797: sub tab. 130). Sent out to the Cafe of Good Hofe by Emferor Josefh II in 1785&?ranz Boos (1753–1832) and Georg Scholl (1751–1831)& two gardeners at Schönbrunn& had twelve sfecies of Pelargoniþm on their list of desiderata (GRÖSCHEL& 2024: 82)& but this clearly does not mean that they had collected the flant which was subsequently described as P. semitrilobþm. The latter name is a synonym of P. adþlterinþm and a lectotyfe for this name is designated here on the original material keft at W (W0007013).
