Evaza javanensis de Meijere, 1911 View in CoL

( Figs 11–15 View FIGURES 11 – 12 View FIGURES 13 – 15 )

Evaza javanensis de Meijere, 1911: 24 View in CoL

Diagnosis. Mostly well defined by dark stigma and distinct oval or round darkened spot around tip of R 5 in wing apex. Yellow stripe along upper margin of anepisternum about as broad as mid tibia, legs yellow, scutum with dense short yellowish to white pubescence. Abdomen distinctly longer than broad, brown, with extensive ochre yellow dorsal disc and venter.

Redescription. Male ( Figs 11–15 View FIGURES 11 – 12 View FIGURES 13 – 15 ). Body length 4.5–6.2 mm, wing length 4.5–5.5 mm. Head only slightly longer than high in profile (1.2 times) and about 1.6 times broader than long in dorsal view ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 11 – 12 ). Ocellar tubercle conspicuously prominent. Frontal silvery white patch above antennae reaching eye margin on each side and leaving bare and shining black apical half of lower frons. Antenna yellow, arista black. Scape barely longer than pedicel, inner distal margin of pedicel not prominent. Thickened part of antennal flagellum slightly broader than distal margin of pedicel. Face subshining black with sparse whitish pubescence, lateral parts of face along eyes without it. Apical segment of palpus spindle-shaped, not reaching half of labellum, yellow. Postocular area narrow, visible only in lower half of head in profile. Head pile partly blackish and erect on face and proboscis, entirely white on postgena.

Thorax subshining black and densely punctate on scutum and scutellum, extensively shining on anepisternum, apex of humeral callus yellowish, yellow stripe along upper margin of anepisternum as broad as mid tibia, postalar callus more brownish. Posterior and lateral margin of scutellum and scutellar spines yellow. Thoracic pile mostly erect to semi-erect, as long as subnotopleural stripe is broad, predominantly white on scutum and scutellum. Legs completely pale yellow including all tarsomeres, only claws brownish. Wing membrane hyaline, stigma brown and wing apex with well separed brownish spot around tip of vein R5. Calypters and halter yellow.

Abdomen oval, often partly clavate,1.5 times as long as broad. Dark brown with discal part of tergites ochre yellow, venter often predominantly yellow ( Figs 11–12 View FIGURES 11 – 12 ). Abdominal pile predominantly black, very short and appressed but erect and longer along broad dark abdominal margin and apex dorsally. Venter with short, appressed and entirely white pubescence. Male terminalia ( Figs 13–15 View FIGURES 13 – 15 ): Proctiger large but shorter than epandrium, cerci relatively short ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13 – 15 ). Gonostylus as in other species, i.e. flattened and somewhat broadened apically but without a submedian spine. Gonocoxal apodemes short, not reaching beyond margin of genital capsule. Genital capsule ( Figs 14–15 View FIGURES 13 – 15 ) broadly emarginated distally in middle, with a medial longitudinal ridge on ventral side and slightly prominent in proximal third. Each inner distal corner of gonocoxite with two subtriangular prominences. Phallic complex rounded and slightly dilated apically.

Female. Body length 4.8–6.3 mm, wing length 4.2–5.0 mm. Head with ocellar tubercle less prominent than in male, head slightly longer than high in profile but almost twice as broad as long in dorsal view. Frons tapering toward lower third, 1.0–1.5 times as broad as anterior ocellus at narrowest point. Transverse supra-antennal whitish patch low and broad, reaching eye margin on each side, barely as high as rest of lower frons. Antennal flagellum larger than in male, more oval, pedicel with semi-oval projection at inner distal margin. Pedicel including inner projection as long as scape. Arista black, short densely pubescent in basal 2/3, appearing as thickened in this part, bristle-like in apical third. Apical segment of palpus not dilated, yellow, slightly reaching over basal half of labellum. Postocular area in dorsal view only twice as broad as diameter of anterior ocellus.

Thorax, legs and wing as in male.

Abdomen more oval, without tendency to slightly clavate shape. Marginal erect hairs distinctly shorter than in male, black along tergites 1 and 2, and mainly whitish on rest margin. Venter often darkened along margin and apex.

Type material. Woodley (2001) mentioned 8 syntypic males and 1 syntypic female (all in RNH now). Singapore: 1 ♂, 1 ♀: botanical garden, 25 m, 11.xii.1958 (1 ♂), 16.xii.1958 (1 ♀), all T. C. Maa, all BPBM .

Remarks. Well characterised by a combination of the wing pattern, the abdominal coloration and the male gonostylus without a submedial spine.Among the specimens examined we found 4 males from Java, Sumatra and W Malaysia with the completely yellow scutellum.

Distribution. Indonesia: Java (syntypes), Sumatra: Fort de Cock [=Bukitinggi], Padang (both Meijere 1916b). From Singapore recorded here for the first time. Records from the Philippines, Maluku and Hawaiian Islands ( James 1969) need a revision.
