Genus Neoitamus Osten Sacken, 1878 View in CoL View at ENA
Neoitamus Osten Sacken, 1878 Osten Sacken (1878: 234) View in CoL . Replacement name for Itamus Loew, 1849 View in CoL .
= Itamus Loew, 1849 Loew (1849: 84) View in CoL : homonym, preocc. Schmidt Goeble (1846).
Type species: Asilus cyanurus Loew, 1849 Loew (1849: 84) [des. Coquillett (1910: 556)].
The South Korean species of Neoitamus are recognized by the acutely long proclinate occipital hair (absent in some species of other regions) and by the elongated and laterally compressed female ovipositor ( Fig. 65 View FIGURES 58 – 66 ). The two most closely related species, N. angusticornis and N. cothurnatus univittatus , are differentiated by the epandrial lobes and gonostyli. Both species constitute large and widespread populations. N. castaneipennis and N. zouhari are distinct. Other workers (Hradský, Tagawa, pers. comm.) on the group have indicated there remains much unresolved material form China, Japan and Taiwan.
