Species 37: Teuchophorus hirsutus View in CoL sp. nov. (male and female) (figures 165–170)

Etymology. Lat. hirsutus , ‘shaggy’, alluding to the hairiness of the female abdomen.

Diagnosis. (Male) Rather small species, with a stigma. Eyes separated. Antenna: basal segments brown, third segment yellowish brown, triangular with a blunt apex, about as long as deep. Legs and coxae pale yellow. Hind femur on apical fifth with five long, thin pv, and a few hair-like av. Hind tibia with three dorsals of unequal length; posteroventrally on basal half a row of thin, hair-like bristles, followed by a remarkable row of crowded, bent hairs. Mid tibia with one or two long ventral bristles on basal half. Hypopygium small, brownish yellow, with finger-shaped, apically darkened surstyli, and sickle-shaped pale yellow cerci.

(Female) Costa distinctly thickened. Terga 3 and 4 medially depressed, bearing longer hairs than usual.

Material examined. Type material: Indonesia, Biak : Warsa, 5 May 1997,    male and      four males, 10 females (No. 97076, leg. P. Grootaert) .

Male

Body length 1.3–1.45 mm; wing length 1.2–1.4 mm.

Head. Frons and face with greenish black ground colour, moderately shining. Face at its narrowest point about half as wide as depth of third antennal segment. Palpi brownish yellow, each with a brownish apical bristlet. Rostrum yellow. Occiput greenish black. Chaetotaxy as usual; a pair of small postocellars. Postoculars uniseriate, brownish yellow. Antenna (figure 165): basal segments brown, third segment yellowish brown. Marginal bristlets on second segment very short, longest above. Third segment more or less triangular, with broadly rounded basal angles, and a blunt apex. Arista about three times as long as antenna, very shortly pubescent; basal aristal segment nearly as long as third antennal segment.

Thorax. Mesonotum and scutellum shining dark metallic green, sometimes brown with a greenish gloss; mesoscutum sidewards and anteriorly brownish. Pleurae pale brown, with a feeble greenish gloss on mesopleura. Chaetotaxy as usual; acr uniseriate, relatively long. Scutellum with short, thin lateral hairs. No propleurals.

Legs. Legs, including coxae, pale yellow; tarsi feebly browned.

Fore leg. Coxa anteriorly with sparse, short yellow hairs, that become longer and bristle-like near tip of coxa. Femur posteroventrally with a row of very short, yellowish bristly hairs. Tibia a little shorter than femur, bearing an inconspicuous posterodorsal serration. First tarsal segment with a small, black spinule at ventral base. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.3:0.18:0.08: 0.06:0.05:0.06.

Mid leg. Coxa with short hairs and hair-like bristlets. Femur ventrally on basal third with a few very short hair-like bristlets; hairs of posteroventral row slightly lengthened; a fairly long preapical av. Tibia about as long as femur; two ad, one pd, all thin, but rather long; one (sometimes two) long, thin ventral bristles on basal half. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.45: 0.2:0.11:0.09: 0.07:0.07.

Hind leg. Coxa with a weak, thin exterior bristle. Femur (figure 166) on apical fifth with five long, but thin pv (the longest of which are slightly longer than greatest depth of femur), and a few hair-like av, two of which are longer (about as long as greatest diameter of femur); near base, ventrally, a few very short bristle-like hairs. Tibia (figure 166) about as long as femur; two or three thin dorsal bristles of unequal length; posteroventrally, on slightly less than basal half, a row of thin, hair-like bristles, slightly longer than diameter of tibia; from middle to three-quarters of tibia a remarkable row of crowded, short, curled hairs. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.45:0.11:0.15: 0.11: 0.07:0.07.

Wing. Wing (figure 167) very feebly brownish tinged. A pale brown stigma, obliquely cut off at base, and there occupying slightly more than half the space between r2+3 and costa, gradually tapering, and reaching beyond level of tp. r4+5 and m1+2 very slightly diverging distally. Length ratio of basal and apical parts of m1+2 about 7:15. Halters yellow. Squamae yellow, with a narrow blackish border, and dark cilia.

Abdomen. Terga glossy dark brown; sterna brown or dark brown. Hairs and hind-marginal bristlets on terga very short, dark. Hypopygium (figures 168, 169) small, brownish yellow; surstyli finger-shaped, darkened apically; cerci sickle-shaped, pale yellow.

Female

Body length 1.35–1.7 mm; wing length 1.2–1.45 mm.

Face hardly wider than in male. Legs simply bristled: fore tibia with a very short, inconspicuous serration; mid femur with a thin preapical av; mid tibia with two ad, one pd and one ventral bristle (beyond middle); hind femur with a weak preapical pv; hind tibia with three dorsal bristles of unequal length. Wing (figure 169) without stigma, but costa distinctly thickened from tip of r1 onwards. Abdomen: terga 3 and 4 somewhat disformed, medially depressed with, on the raised left and right parts, longer hairs than usual. Oviscapt with eight small black acanthae.
