Specimens from Bulgaria and South Romania are small with a mean male body length = 11.55 mm (n = 41) and mean female body length = 13.04 mm (n = 23), and a short pronotum in males (0.82–1 times as long as wide at base, mean = 0.94, n = 41); pronotal lateral protuberances are blunt or with short spines ( Figs 5 View FIGURE 5 j–l, 6a–c, Table 1 View TABLE 1 ). The populations have both autochrome and androchrome females and sometimes autochrome females predominate (in a large series of specimens collected on the same day from Esechioi, there are three androchrome females and twelve autochrome females).
Dorcadion litigiosum View in CoL var. varnarum Pic was described based on an unstated number of females from Varna, Bulgaria ( Pic 1926). It was considered as a morph of D. axillare View in CoL by Breuning (1962) and as a synonym of D. axillare View in CoL by Danilevsky (2010). In order to preserve the stability of nomenclature, the unique specimen in MNHN that bears an identification label and a type label in Pic’s handwriting is here designated lectotype. It is an autochrome female of D. axillare View in CoL , with grayish background pubescence on elytra ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ).
