Materialexamined – Femaleholotype: CostaRica , Alajuela, 20 kmSfromUpala, 10 – 19 March 1991, leg. F. D. Parker. – Holotypeisingoodcondition: (1) glueddirecttothepin bytherightsideofmesosoma, (2) rightforelegsomewhatlessvisibleowingtothegluing. Holotype is deposited in HNHM, Hym. Typ. No. 12239.
Etymology – Thespeciesreceivedthename “latistigma”, referingtoitswidepterostigma (Fig. 296).
Description of the female holotype – Body 2.6 mm long. Antenna almost as long as body (2.4 mmlong) andwith 16 antennomeres. Scapesomewhatbelly: thriceaslongasbroad proximally (Fig. 289). Firstflagellomerelong, seventimesaslongasbroad, furtherflagellomeresshorteningsothatpenultimateflagellomere 1.25 timesaslongasbroad. – Head indorsalviewtransverse, 2.1 timesasbroadaslong, eye 2.5 timeslongerthantemple, templereceded (Fig. 290). OOLslightlylongerthanPOL (10:9). Eyeinlateralview 1.9 timesashighaswide, genabeyondeyefaintlybroadeningventrally, lesswidethaneye, genapolishedwithveryfineanddispersesubstriolae (Fig. 291). Clypeus 1.5 timesaswide belowashighmedially, itslowermargintruncate (Fig. 292). Faceandclypeuscoriaceoussubrugulose, subshiny, sculptureofclypeusslightlyweaker. Headabovedenselysubrugulose, subshiny (Fig. 290).
Mesosomainlateralviewstout, slightly (1.1 times) longerthanhigh, scabrous-rugose. Scutellumdenselyrugo-rugulose (cf. Fig. 412). Transversecarinaofpropodeumless strong, withfoursmalldenticules (Fig. 293). Hindfemur 3.5 timesaslongasbroadmedi- ally (Fig. 294). Hindtibiathickening, distallyasbroadasfemur (cf. Fig. 165). Hindbasi- tarsusaslongastarsomeres 2–3 combined. Pairofspursofhindtibiasubequal (Fig. 295).
Forewingone- sixthshorterthanbody (2.2 mmlong). Pterostigmawide, 2.2 timesas long as wide and issuing r just distally from its middle, r slightly longer than 3–SR (6:5), SR1 faintlybent, 1–R1 short: 0.7 timesaslongaspterostigma (Fig 296).
Carapaceindorsalviewglobose, 1.6 timesaslongasbroadslightlyposteriorlyfrom itsmiddle, anteriorlystriatedwithlittleanastomoses, posteriorlydenselyrugulose, apically (i.e. declivouspart) polished. Carapaceinlateralview 2.9 timesaslongashighposte- riorly, itshindenddeclivous (Fig. 298). Carapaceapico-ventrallysomewhatincurved (cf. Fig. 262). Ovipositorsheathshort, concealed.
Groundcolourofbodyblack.Scapeandpedicelyellow. Flagellumdarkbrowntoblackish, flagellomeres 3–4 strawyellow. Palpidarkbrownish. Tegulaandforehalfofcarapace yellow. Legsbrowntodarkbrown, withstrawyellowtoyellowpattern (coxae, trochanters, tibiae). Wingssubhyaline, pterostigmabrown, veinsyellowtobrownish, lightbrown.
Maleandhostunknown.
Distribution – Costa Rica.
Taxonomic position – The new species, Microchelonus latistigma , is closest to M. candidus sp. n. and M. exceptus sp. n., see the couplets of the key to the female Microchelonus species 4 (3) – 8 (9).
