TYPE SPECIES: Myrmecophaga capensis Gmelin, 1788 (= Myrmecophaga afra Pallas, 1766 ).

COMMENTS: Sherborn (1902:701) gave Orycteropus "Geoffroy, Decad. Phil, et Litt. XXVIII. 1795", but it is untracable. Meester et al. (1986: 182) reviewed and assigned the correct generic name.
