Xylophilus crassicornis Muona, 2000
( Fig. 2, 3 View Figures 1–6 )
This rarely seen eucnemid species was found in Arkansas, Maryland, Virginia, Wisconsin ( Evans 2011; Muona 2000; Otto 2010, 2012), and now taken for the first time in Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Vermont and West Virginia. Specimens were taken from Lindgren funnel traps, intercept panel trap, flight intercept trap, beaten from small dead standing hardwood and from a weed. Muona (2000) commented on color variation in a related species, Xylophilus cylindriformis (Horn), with some specimens being darker than others. Examination of a number of specimens throughout much of eastern United States indicates that color variations are also present in X. crassicornis . Some specimens were observed to be much darker than others ( Fig. 2 View Figures 1–6 ), contrary to Otto’s (2012) previous diagnostic assessment of the species. A small number of specimens were observed to have completely orange elytra ( Fig. 3 View Figures 1–6 ). Diagnostically, the best character state to identify X. crassicornis from X. cylindriformis is the consistent presence of very shallow, sparse pronotal punctures in X. crassicornis (pronotum densely rugose, punctate in X. cylindriformis).
