Cercosaura View in CoL View at ENA sp. 4
Taxonomic remarks. Cercosaura sp. 4 differs from other Cercosaura species in some aspects of scutellation and coloration. It was cited by Ribeiro-Júnior & Amaral (2016b: 220) as an undescribed subspecies of Cercosaura ocellata ( C. ocellata ssp.). However, this taxon has some differences that can promptly distinguish it from the other species of Cercosaura . It is under study as part of the revision of the genus Cercosaura .
Distribution and habitat. Cercosaura sp. 4 is widespread in open vegetation areas in central Brazil, and also present in apparently isolated areas along the Brazilian coast ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ). Smith et al. (2011) also reported it from open areas in Paraguay (identified as C. ocellata ocellata ). In Brazil, it is known from the states of Paraíba, Pernambuco, Bahia, Tocantins, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and in the Distrito Federal. In Amazonia it occurs in enclaves of open vegetation in northern Mato Grosso and southern Rondônia. Cercosaura sp. 4 is terrestrial and diurnal, inhabits several plant physiognomies of the Brazilian Cerrado (Recoder & Nogueira 2007; Uetanabaro et al. 2007; Vaz-Silva et al. 2007; Recoder et al. 2011; Smith et al. 2011), a small, contiguous portion of chaco vegetation in Brazil (Souza et al. 2010), and restinga vegetation (Couto-Ferreira et al. 2011), where it is mainly found among leaf litter (Nogueira et al. 2005; Silva et al. 2009).
