Type material. Holotype SMBL (Seto Marine Biological Laboratory) Type 205 Ophiolepis utinomii (= Ophioteichus utinomii comb. nov.), alcohol (10 mm disc diameter, 17 mm arm length and width 1.99 mm), from Hatakejima Island, at the head of Tanabe Bay, Wakayama-ken, Japan, littoral zone, collected by Prof. H. Utinomi, August, 1967.

Diagnosis (modified from Irimura, 1967). Disc circular in outline, hemispherical in shape, higher than the arms and covered with a coat of numerous swollen, smooth plates; each plate is surrounded by a belt of squarish smaller flat scales. The disc scales are flat and smooth and have the same pattern dorsally and ventrally. Radial shields moderate, smooth and flat, each pair separated by two conspicuous tubercles. In each interradius the disc margin is encircled by three or four spherical tubercles. Accessory dorsal and ventral arms plates are fragmented. Five oral papillae on each side, plus an apical papillae. Seven, slender, acute, closely spaced and serrated arm spines. With three tentacle scales of which two scales are flat and of the same size, while the third one is reduced.
