Machaeropsis Melichar View in CoL , redefined
Machaeropsis Melichar, 1903: 137 View in CoL . Type-species by monotypy: M. valida Melichar, 1903 View in CoL .
Diagnosis. Antenna as in Capnodistini (Aphrophorinae) in having the postpedicel deeply withdrawn into the tip of the pedicel, bearing only a single peglike basiconic sensillum near the arista, lacking both coeloconic sensilla and surface sculpturing; antennal ledge narrow and triangular, similar to that of Hindola ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 18 – 32 B) but lacking the distinct ridges, as in Enderleinia E. Schmidt. Inner and outer apical cells of tegmen extending about equally basad; male genitalia as in Chaetophyes E. Schmidt ( Maa 1963, fig. 13), but style tip smaller than triangular base and theca thick, straight, with a stout spine on the anterior margin ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 10 – 16 C) resembling that of Pseudomachaerota ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 5 – 9 C).
Remarks. The new species, described below, is the first time a male of this genus has been found. The superficially similar Machaeropsis and Metaenderleinia were synonymized by Maa (1963) but the male genitalia of both prove to be autapomorphous. For example, the theca of Metaenderleinia is massive and curved dorsad ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 10 – 16 B). It is anticipated that additional characters separating these genera will be found when the antennae of Metaenderleinia become known.
