Cavernocypris coreana elongata ( McKenzie, 1972)
( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2. A – C I & J)
1972 ‘ Cypridopsis’ coreana n. sp., elongata n. subsp. —McKenzie: 160–162, figs 16–24.
nov. comb. 1989 Cavernocypris coreana ( McKenzie, 1972) — Marmonier et al.: 234–235, figs 5–9.
Material examined. Three females from a small trickle on Daegwnryeong Hill, Gangreung, (37°41′27″N, 128°45′38″E) (locality 1 on Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ), 3 October 2010. Ten females from coarse sediment of a small, steep stream in Okgye Valley at Oksan-ri, Dalsan-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do (36º20′10.4″N, 129º16′31.4″E) (locality 5 on Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ), 5 June 2011. One hundred and twenty-five females from small seeps and springs along the edges of a footpath in the wooded Deokgu Valley at Deokgu-ri, Buk-myeon, Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do (37º04′33.3″N, E129º15′27.6″E) (locality 2 on Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ), 6 June 2011.
Remarks. Specimens range from translucent white through to orange-brown in colour. This is the second time this subspecies has been reported, and so far records are restricted to South Korea ( McKenzie 1972). McKenzie (op. cit.) reported and figured males from populations in caves collected during April, but all specimens recovered by us at the surface appear to be females. This suggests that this subspecies is geographically parthenogenetic, or sexual populations are restricted to subterranean habitats, or males are not present in June or October.
