Comparison. Stethantyx sinuata sp. nov. differs from all other Amazonian species of the genus by the sinuous ovipositor apex. It also has the upper mandibular tooth distinctly longer than the lower tooth, but not so long as in most other species.
Description. Female. Body length 4.8 mm. Fore wing length 3.4 mm.
Head strongly rounded behind eyes in dorsal view (back of head is attached to card, thus length of temple cannot be measured). Mandible with upper tooth longer than lower tooth. Clypeus moderately broad, with lower margin somewhat impressed laterally, weakly convex in lateral view, smooth with fine punctures in its upper half. Malar space 0.55× as long as basal width of mandible. Antennal flagellum distinctly narrowed towards apex, with 29 segments; all flagellomeres, except basal and apical ones, about 1.3–1.4× as long as broad. Face with longitudinal prominence centrally. Face, frons, vertex and temple with moderately large, very dense punctures (punctures are larger on frons), finely granulate, dull.
Notaulus absent. Mesoscutum finely and very densely punctate on finely granulate, dull background. Scutellum finely granulate and finely punctate, with lateral longitudinal carinae short, reaching from its base to basal 0.3. Foveate groove of mesopleuron situated in anterior 0.6 of mesopleuron, moderately oblique, with strong transverse wrinkles, not reaching anterior margin of mesopleuron. Mesopleuron finely granulate, dull, with fine, mostly indistinct punctures. Propodeum finely granulate, dull, dorsolateral area indistinctly punctate; all carinae strong, without adjacent wrinkles. Basal area of propodeum about 1.5× as long as broad, weakly widened anteriorly, 0.35× as long as apical area. Propodeal spiracle separated from pleural carina by one diameter of spiracle. Apical area slightly impressed along midline, anteriorly narrowly rounded.
Fore wing with first and second sections of radius angled about 110°. Intercubitus about as long as abscissa of cubitus between intercubitus and second recurrent vein. Metacarpus almost reaching apex of fore wing. Hind wing with nervellus slightly reclivous.
Legs slender. Hind femur 4.5× as long as broad, and 0.88× as long as tibia. Hind spurs slightly curved at apex.
First tergite slender, 3.6× as long as posteriorly broad, predominantly smooth with petiole somewhat striate laterally before glymma. Glymma situated slightly behind middle of tergite, joining by fine furrow to ventral part of postpetiole. Second tergite about twice as long as anteriorly broad. Thyridial depression very shallow, about 2.5× as long as broad. Ovipositor weakly upcurved basally and then more or less straight most of its length, distinctly sinuate at apex and with weak dorsal subapical depression; sheath 1.8× as long as first tergite and about 1.7× as long as hind tibia.
Head black with face below dark reddish brown; clypeus (except reddish brown extreme upper margin), palpi, mandible (teeth dark red) and lower part of temple near base of mandible yellow. Antenna with scape and pedicel yellow-brown, flagellum fuscous. Mesosoma and first metasomal segment brownish orange. Tegula brownish yellow. Pterostigma brown. Legs brownish yellow, hind tibia and tarsus infuscate. Metasoma behind first tergite predominantly yellow, anterior 0.5–0.7 of second and following tergites dorsally brown to dark brown.
Male. Unknown.
Etymology. Named in reference to its sinuous ovipositor.
Material examined. Holotype female (ZMUT), Peru, Loreto reg., Iquitos Area, Allpahuayo, clayish soil, 17.XI–3.XII.1998, coll. I.E. Sääksjärvi et al.
