Elephantomyia major uniformis Alexander, 1923b: 478 View in CoL . Type locality: Tattaka, Taiwan ( China).
Diagnosis. Rostrum slightly longer than half of body. Mesonotum dark brownish yellow with a broad median darker stripe. Pleuron brownish yellow. First tarsi of legs with distal 1/5–1/4 snowy white. Wing with darker spots on stigma and cell Sc; basal section of CuA1 at 1/4–1/3 of cell dm, cell a2 short and narrow. Abdominal segments more or less bicolored.
Description. Male. Body length 9.5–10.0 mm, wing length 8.5–9.0 mm, rostrum length 5.5–6.0 mm.
Head (fig. 53). Brown. Hairs on head brownish black. Antenna length 1.2–1.4 mm, brownish black. Flagellomeres except first flagellomere nearly equal in length; first flagellomere elongate and slightly enlarged, nearly twice as long as second flagellomere. Rostrum brownish black with brownish black hairs.
Thorax. Generally dark brownish yellow (slightly testaceous in dry-mounted specimens). Pronotum dark brownish yellow. Mesonotum dark brownish yellow with a broad median darker stripe, stripe narrowed behind. Scutum brownish yellow with middle area paler. Scutellum dark brownish yellow. Mediotergite brownish black (fig. 54). Pleuron (fig. 52) brownish yellow. Hairs on thorax brown. Coxae yellow to brownish yellow; trochanters yellow; femora black with bases narrowly paler; tibiae black; first tarsi black with distal 1/5–1/4 snowy white, remaining tarsi snowy white, terminal tarsi infuscated. Hairs on legs black, white on snowy white regions of tarsi. Wing (fig. 55) pale brown, darker spots on stigma and cell Sc; veins brown. Venation: Sc1 ending at or just before fork of Rs, Sc2 near its tip; basal section of CuA1 beyond fork of M and at 1/4–1/3 of cell dm; cell a2 short and narrow. Haltere length 1.2 mm, yellow with knob brown.
Abdomen (fig. 52). Tergites dark brownish yellow with caudal halves brownish black, brownish black regions usually larger and making tergites mostly brownish black. Sternites brownish yellow with caudal halves darker. Terminal three segments uniformly brownish black. Hairs on abdomen brown.
Hypopygium (figs. 56–57). Generally brownish black. Posterior margin of tergite nine with broad and deep Ushaped notch. Gonocoxite conical with long thin hairs on inside face. Clasper of gonostylus slender and slightly curved, tip bidentate. Lobe of gonostylus stout and curved, tip slender and blunt. Interbase schistose and nearly oval, tip relatively acute. Paramere long, straight and club-shaped, tip blunt. Aedeagus long, slender and curved dorsally, nearly 3–4 times as long as paramere.
Female. Unknown.
Specimens examined. Holotype male ( USNM), China: Taiwan, Tattaka, 1921. VIII.16, T. Esaki. Other material: 1 male ( CAU), China: Taiwan, Nantou, Riyuetan (23°52'19"N 120°55'19"E, 750 m), 2011. VI.18, Xiaoyan Liu.
Distribution. China ( Taiwan).
Remarks. Male hypopygium and female of this species are described and illustrated for the first time. For description of this species, also see Alexander (1923b).
