Range: — Costa Rica to Bolivia (CO, LP, SC); possibly more widespread but often lumped with S. fraxinifolium View in CoL .
Ecology: —Uncommon; terrestrial, rarely epiphytic, in humid forests; 1250–2450 m.
Notes: —Differs from S. fraxinifolium and S. polystichum by having much thicker rhizomes (about 1 cm vs. <0.5 cm diam.), 5–10 rows of sori between the costae and the pinna margins, wider pinnae (4–6 cm vs. 1.5–4 cm wide), and usually terrestrial (vs. epiphytic) habit.
