Alansmia smithii (A.Rojas) Moguel & M.Kessler, Brittonia View in CoL 63(2): 242. 2011.
= Terpsichore smithii A.Rojas, Mét. Ecol. Sist. 3(2): 15(–16), f. 4. 2008.
Range: —Hispaniola; Mexico and Guatemala; Panama; Venezuela to Bolivia (CO, LP, SC).
Ecology: —Common; epiphytic, rarely saxicolous, in humid forests; 1300–2800 m.
Notes: —Plants of Alansmia smithii were formerly often identified as Alansmia cultrata (Bory ex Willd.) Moguel (or Terpsichore cultrata (Bory ex Willd.) A.R.Sm. ), a species here considered to be restricted to the circum-Caribbean region. Like A. contacta , some extraterritorial specimens of A. smithii also lack setae on the sporangia, e.g., Vásquez et al. 33727 (MO, UC), from Peru, Dept. Pasco. The presence/absence of sporangial setae is normally a reliable character for recognition of species of Alansmia . The possibility of hybridization among species of Alansmia cannot be excluded.
