Diagnosis. The species is recognizable by long porrect labial palpus, yellow to light brown forewing with veins mottled with brown, as well as brown spots in cell and along apex. Ematheudes punctellus remotely resembles Hypsotropa vulneratella ( Zeller, 1847) and related species, but can easily be recognized by the shape of the labial palpus. Short process on the dorsal margin of valva is characteristic for the male genitalia. The female genitalia are characterized by a distinct signum in combination with narrow subostial sclerites.
Re-description. Adult ( Figs 11, 12 View FIGURES 11–14 ). Wingspan 20–27 mm.
Head yellow to light brown, labial palpus about five times as long as diameter of an eye, yellow, down curved, segment 3 about half as long as segment 2, scape and flagellum yellow, anetanna in male densely ciliated and thicker than in female, proboscis slightly shorter than the length of labial palpus.
Thorax and tegulae yellow to light brown. Forewing straw-yellow to light brown, veins mottled with light brown or reddish-pink, transverse subapical angulated row of brown spots, brown spots at base and in the cell corner, cilia white; hindwing and cilia light grey.
Male genitalia ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 11–14 ). Uncus lobes broad, subtriangular, divided by narrow incision. Distal sclerite of gnathos large, ovate. Tegumen trapezoidal, gradually narrowed posteriorely. Valva elongated, gradually narrowed towards pointed apex, distal half densely covered with hair-like setae, ventral margin with short triangular incision in middle, dorsal margin with narrow process from the base to about half length, apex oblique cut, projecting dorsally. Juxta in the shape of a mushroom cap. Saccus broadly rounded. Aedeagus slightly longer than valva, of equal width except for weakly narrowed distal 1/4.
Female genitalia ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 11–14 ). Papillae anales twice as long as broad, dorsal margin straight with additional spiral sclerotisation, basal margin strongly edged, ventral margin broadly rounded, apical 1/5 strongly narrowed and turned dorsally. Apophyses posteriores straight, two times as long as the length of papillae anales. Segment VIII subtrapezoidal, weakly narrowed posteriorely, tergum VIII with short rounded medial emargination, sternum VIII evenly sclerotized except for narrow subostial sclerite and several transverse folds, posterior margin with a short and broad medial emargination, subgenital plates broad, closely connected. Apophyses anteriores broadened at base, slightly longer than segment VIII. Ductus bursae narrow at base, then gradually broadened towards egg-shaped corpus bursae, signum plate rounded, covered with short spines.
Biology. Host plant unknown. In Ukraine, adults have been collected in June-July.
Distribution. South Europe, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Cyprus, Syria ( Leraut 2014), Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Russia: Middle Volga region, West and East Caucasus regions ( Sinev 2008); Ukraine: Zakarpattia ( Gleba 2019), Crimea ( Budashkin 1992, 2004), Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions (new records), Odesa region ( Novitsky 2019). The record in Kautz (1944) can most likely be attributed to Luhansk region.
