Description. TL 5.0– 5.6 mm, MW 2.4–2.8 mm. Shiny, quite similar to N. laeviventris (see below) but larger, with body outline a little more regular, due to the less pronounced angle between pronotum and elytra. Dark patterns on pronotum and elytra often more extended.

Head reddish-yellow, with two dark periocular bands, more or less developed. Ventral face of head reddish-brown; mouthparts reddish-yellow with last segment of palpi darkened. Antennae yellow with last 6–8 segments darkened.

Pronotum as in N. laeviventris but with posterior angles slightly more acute.

Elytra elongate, almost straight laterally, with maximum width just behind the shoulders; series of punctures fine but visible. Subapical spine well visible in both sexes.

Dorsal colouration ( Fig. 30 a-d) reddish-yellow on head and pronotum, this latter with extended dark markings, often completely black; elytra yellow, with variegate dark patterns as in figures, rarely reduced in longitudinale stripes.

Ventral side brownish, often slightly darkened along the sutures; hypomera, epipleuron, prosternal process and metacoxal process faded. Prosternal processes variable in shape: from triangular to broadly oval, with central elevation weak or obsolete. Surface covered by a fine and dense punctuation.

Legs reddish, darkened on tarsi; metatibiae dark.

Male: protarsal claws subequal in length ( Fig. 30e,f), with the inner slightly shorter than the outer, without visible sinuation on ventral side. Median lobe of aedeagus ( Fig. 30h) thin in dorsal view and apically bent downside in lateral view. Parameres ( Fig. 30g) less broad apically than in other species of this group.

Female: often duller than males.

Variability. Species variable in the extent of the dark patterns on pronotum and elytra. The tendency of an almost completely dark pronotum is more common than in other species of this subgroup; nevertheless, I have not seen black or almost completely black specimen. On the contrary, a few have elytra with dark patterns reduced in longitudinal vittae or even almost without vittae and pronotal markings. As also known in N. stearinus (see below), rare rufescent specimens exist, with indistinct patterns on elytra and pronotum, found together with normal individuals ( Fig. 30d).

Habitat. This species is very common on the island and it has been collected mainly in pools on the bed of slow-flowing streams and rivers, from sea level to low mountains (810 m). It can be abundant among gravel and stones, and it has been often collected in association with the following Dytiscidae : Scarodytes malickyi Wewalka , Bidessus cretensis Fery and Agabus dilatatus (Brullé) . Collected also in mountain springs.

Distribution ( Fig. 49). Endemic to Crete.
