Western Palaearctic, Paneuropean and also distributed in North-Mediterranean, Pontic, Anatolian, Maghrebian and Iranian areas
Notes. Type-material presumably lost, neotype preserved in Bernini’s Collection at the University of Siena ( Avanzati et al. 1995) .
Subías (2022) considered Hoplophora anomala Berlese, 1883 as subspecies of S. (S.) magnus although it was previously synonymized ( Bernini & Avanzati 1988a) with S. (S.) magnus .
By using the combined dataset of the partial sequences of 28S rDNA (D3) and COI in Kreipe et al. (2015) showed that Steganacarus (Steganacarus) anomalus may have species status. However, they reserved that for certainty it is necessary to investigate more individuals and more molecular markers.

Eastern Palaearctic, Far East subregion. Oriental, Indonesia, China
Notes. Acrotritia simile (Mahunka, 1982) and Tritia (Pseudotritia) similis Sellnick, 1923 are two different species. Acrotritia simile (Mahunka, 1982) is the species of Palaearctic ( North Korea) origin while Tritia (Pseudotritia) similis Sellnick, 1923 comes from Neotropical Region ( Brazil). Both species differ in the following morphological characters: bothridial scale of prodorsum situated above bothridium (versus under bothridium), the presence of one pair of lateral carinae of prodorsum (versus two pairs), the distance between rostral setae slightly shorter than that between lamellar setae (versus these distance considerably longer), rostral setae straight directed (versus rostral setae bent inwards). Two different forms simile and similis mean the same, masculine and feminine forms are similis , while the neuter is simile . Niedbała & Liu (2018) considered Mahunka’s spelling as a lapsus calami, therefore, both names must be considered as homonymous and proposed a new name A. mahunkai for junior homonym - R. simile . This grammatical inflection connected with the noun gender has been pointed out by Mr. Karl-Heinz Schmidt, Oderwitz.
Attempting to synonymization of Neotropical A. monodactyla with Palaearctic A. simile by Oliveira et al. (2017) is surprising. Both species differ clearly by the shape of trichobothria.
Subías (2022) considered this species as congeneric with A. rustica (Niedbała, 1991) . See note of A. rustica .

Note. Subías (2022) considered it as subspecies of Austrophthiracarus aokiii Mahunka, 1983 . However, the differences between these two taxa presented in Mahunka (2010a) are sufficient to distinguish two separate species. Above all, the arrangement of genital setae indicates that both these species belong to two different genera.

Western Palaearctic, known from Iberian subregion
Notes. It is not understandable what is the reason that Subías (2010) identified this species with P. stramineus (C.L. Koch, 1841) — species inquirenda whose taxonomical status is ambiguous. With regard to Jacot (1936) description of P. stramineus based on topotypic material, P. malagensis differs considerably from P. stramineus by the trichobothria rounded distally (versus pointed distally in P. stramineus ), setae ad 1 and ad 2 vestigial (versus well developed). Subías (2022) identified this species with P. longulus (C.L. Koch, 1841) . Phthiracarus malagensis differs from P. longulus by the trichobothria rounded distally (versus pointed distally in P. longulus ) and complete chaetome of legs (versus chaetome reduced, setae v´ of femora I and seta l´ on genua IV absent).
Subías (2022) considered this species as congeneric with
P. longulus . However, P. malagensis has rounded distal end of trichobothria (versus pointed end in P. longulus ), longer notogastral setae and chaetome of legs complete (versus chaetome incomplete).
