Dombrow (2001) established Leptocnemis Dombrow (2001: 116) for seven species of scarab beetles from South Africa (type species Gymnoloma strigosa Burmeister, 1844 , by original designation) ( Scarabaeidae : Hopliinae: Hopliini). No additional species have been described.
However, the dragonfly genus Leptocnemis had been established by Selys Longchamps (1886: 223) as a replacement name for Hemicnemis Selys Longchamps (1882: 668) nec Hemicnemis Müller & Troschel, 1840 (Echinodermata, a junior synonym of Luidia Forbes, 1839 ). Neither of the two species from the Seychelles, Trichocnemis bilineata Selys Longchamps, 1882 and Trichocnemis cyanops Selys Longchamps, 1882 , that were included was designated the type species by Selys Longchamps (1882, 1886); the latter is now considered a junior synonym of the former. No additional species have been described.
To resolve the homonymy, in accordance with Article 60 of the Code, we propose Phillsoppia Allsopp & Schoolmeesters , replacement name as the replacement name for Leptocnemis Dombrow nec Selys Longchamps. This results in seven new combinations for the species currently included in this genus (see below).
