Carvalhoiella stysi Nieser, Pelli & Melo View in CoL
( Figs. 26–32 View FIGURES 26 – 31 View FIGURE 32 )
Carvalhoiella stysi Nieser, Pelli & Melo, 1999: 162 View in CoL –163.
Discussion. This species was known in the literature only by females. In addition to the original description, it was recorded from the Serra da Canastra, which is close to the type locality ( Pelli et al. 2006). In some specimens, the posterior margin of the subgenital plate is almost straight, as in C. beckeri , which can lead to misidentifications if only this feature is considered. Thus, it is also necessary to examine the ventral coloration of the body and structures specific to males, including the genitalia.
Macropterous male. (n = 6) Length 9.12–10.72 (mean = 9.77); maximum width 6.08–7.04 (mean = 6.00). Similar to macropterous female in general structure and coloration except as follows: Tergum V asymmetrical, with concavity of posterior margin slightly displaced to left. Tergum VI asymmetrical with concavity larger on right lateral margin, without accessory genitalic process or posterior protuberance. Medial lobes of tergum VIII directed posterolaterally, with truncate or rounded apices ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 26 – 31 ). Parameres symmetrical, with concave anterior margin, acuminate apex. Pygophore with anterior margin between parameres straight, truncate ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 26 – 31 ). Phallosoma elongate, ventrally with pair of sclerotized lobes with posterior margins rounded and unarmed with teeth, with right ventral lobe larger than left lobe ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 26 – 31 ).
Diagnosis. The dark brown ventral color pattern ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 26 – 31 ) and the shallowly concave posterior margin of the female subgenital plate ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 26 – 31 ) are diagnostic. It is most similar to C. acuminata sp. nov. because both species have the ventral coloration of the body dark brown and the medial lobes of tergum VIII of the male have the apices rounded. However, C. stysi can be differentiated from it by the concave posterior margin of the female subgenital plate, whereas it is broadly acuminate in C. acuminata sp. nov.
Distribution. This species was known only from the state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil ( Nieser et al. 1999; Pelli et al. 2006). Here we examined specimens from new localities in Minas Gerais and specimens from the northern part of the state of Goiás, central-western Brazil, which represents the northernmost record of this species ( Fig. 32 View FIGURE 32 ).
