Body elongate and moderately deep, robust; lateral line reduced to a series of individual pits along side of body; fins without spines; a single dorsal fin; males with anal fin modified into a short gonopodium not extend- ing beyond the dorsal fin insertion; caudal fin truncate to rounded; general coloration yellowish gray or pale yellow, darker dorsally, usually yellowish or grayish brown, and paler, usually yellowish white or almost white with bluish or greenish highlights, ventrally; sides with 6–8, usually 7, rows of yellow dots (1 per scale); fins usually transparent or yellow, red, principally the dorsal fin, in a few specimens); in some males the dorsal and caudal fins have black spots or blotches on the base; maximum body length ca 100 mm SL.
