Begonia sect. Austales L.B.Sm. & B.G.Schub.
status

Begonia sect. Austales L.B.Sm. & B.G.Schub.

Darwiniana 5: 80 ( Smith & Schubert 1941b).

– Type: lectotype: Begonia micranthera Griseb. View in CoL , designated by Barkley & Baranov (1972: 2).

Notes

Begonia sect. Australes was treated as synonymous with B. sect. Eupetalum until it was reinstated by Moonlight et al. (2018) on the basis of phylogenetic data. The section was recently revised by Tebbitt (2020) and includes the majority of tuberous, caulescent species of Andean Begonia with large flowers and bifid styles. Begonia sect. Australes is most diverse in Bolivia and northwest Argentina, and we recognise three species from central and southern Peru.
