Type species. Mutilla arenaria Fabricius, 1787 (female), by subsequent designation of Ashmead, 1904: 7 (junior subjective synonym of Mutilla atrata Linnaeus, 1767 (male), according to Petersen, 1988: 141).

Taxonomic history. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by Dalla Torre, 1897: 5. Reinstated to generic status by Ashmead, 1899: 54. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by André, 1902 b: 381. Reinstated to generic status by André, 1902c: 65. Senior subjective synonym of Allomutilla Ashmead, 1899 . Valid generic name.

Sex association. The male of the type species was associated and described by Dufour, 1852: xlv; the male of its senior synonym was described by Linnaeus, 1767: 966.
