Type species. Mutilla capitata Lucas, 1849 (male), by subsequent designation of Ashmead, 1903: 332.

Taxonomic history. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by Dalla Torre, 1897: 5. Junior subjective synonym of Myrmilla Wesmael, 1851 according to André, 1902c: 24. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1903: 332. Junior subjective synonym of Myrmilla Wesmael, 1851 according to Bischoff, 1920: 54. Junior subjective synonym of Pseudomutilla Costa, 1885 according to Lelej in Lelej & Kabakov, 1980: 195. Subjectively invalid name.

Sex association. The female of the type species was associated and identified (as Mutilla parvicollis Costa, 1860: 35 ) by Morawitz, 1865: 98.

Distribution. Palaearctic.
