Gender. Feminine.

Type species. Mutilla pectinata Sichel & Radoszkowski, 1869 (female), by original designation.

Taxonomic history. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Smicromyrme Thomson, 1870 ) by Bradley & Bequaert, 1923: 229. Reinstated to generic status by Invrea, 1936: 125. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Timulla Ashmead, 1899 ) by Krombein, 1951b: 290. Reinstated to generic status by Invrea, 1952: 52. Valid generic name.

Sex association. The male of the type species has not been recognized; the presumed males of other species were associated and described by Nonveiller, 1995b: 42.

Distribution. Afrotropical, Oriental.
