Gender. Feminine.

Type species. Mutilla europaea Linnaeus, 1758 (female), by subsequent designation of Latreille, 1810: 437. For discussions of type species see Morice & Durrant (1915: 429–430) and Bradley (1919: 71).

Taxonomic history. Valid generic name.

Sex association. The male of the type species was described by Linnaeus, 1767: 967 (through a printer's error the decription of male Mutilla europaea was placed after the description of Mutilla atrata according to Petersen, 1988: 161).

Distribution. Afrotropical, Palaearctic, Oriental.
