Type species. Mutilla empyrea Gerstaecker, 1874 (female), by original designation. The designations of Mutilla tenebrosa Gerstaecker, 1874 (male), simultaneously by André, 1902c: 46 and later by Ashmead, 1903: 307 are invalid (determined by the “first reviser” Mickel, 1928: 37).

Taxonomic history. Valid generic name.

Sex association. The male of the type species has not been recognized; the males of other species were associated and described (for the genus) by André, 1902c: 46.

Distribution. Neotropical.
