CONTEXT AND CONTENT. Order Chiroptera , suborder Yangochiroptera , family Molossidae , subfamily Molossinae , genus Molossops . Earlier classifications on the genus Molossops included two subgenera: Cynomops and Molossops ( Freeman 1981a) . However, based on chromosomal number, and cranial and external morphological differences, Molossops was treated as a distinct genus ( Barquez et al. 1999; Peters et al. 2002; Simmons 2005; Eger 2008). Three subgenera, Cabreramops , Neoplatymops , and the nominal subgenus Molossops , were then included within Molossops ( Freeman 1981a; Ibáñez 1981; Koopman 1993; Gregorin 2000; Simmons 2005); although other authors considered these subgenera to be sufficiently distinct to warrant generic status ( Barquez et al. 1999; Peters et al. 2002; Eger 2008; Gregorin and Cirranello 2016). In a molecular phylogenetic study of the family Molossidae , a sister relationship between Molossops and Cynomops was recovered (also see Peters et al. 2002), and Neoplatymops did not form a monophyletic clade with Molossops , supporting its generic status ( Ammerman et al. 2012). This relationship was also confirmed in a phylogenetic study using an independent morphological data set, and recommended that the subgenera of Molossops be recognized at the generic level (Gregorin and Cirranello 2016).
