Brontostoma sanguinosum ( Stål, 1872) View in CoL

In his redescription of the female holotype of this species, Wygodzinsky (1951) stated that the holotype was labeled as “Bogotá/Lindig/sanguinosus/ Typus /149.” As in other species collected by Lindig, Bogotá is probably not the real locality but the place from which the specimens were shipped to Europe. This is argued given the fact that this species has not been found above 1500 meters, while Bogotá is at 2600 meters. Lindig collected plants and insects in Colombia between 18591863, including many lowland areas ( Horn & Kahle 1935; Barnhart 1965; Hertel & Schreiber 1988). Furthermore, around the same period of time a similar situation ocurred with bird skins labeled as “Bogotá,” which it was just the shipping denomination for the commercial trade, the real locality being someplace else ( Paynter 1997). B. sanguinosum has been recorded from Colombia, Brazil and Peru ( Maldonado 1990; Dougherty 1995). Additional localities from Colombia are given here ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ).
